Study an MBA? … Choose The Best

Study an MBA? … we tell you how to choose the best

The EMBA Global Asia, taught jointly by Columbia Business School, London Business School and the University of Hong Kong, has achieved in its first year of participation the second position in the Executive MBA Ranking of the Financial Times (FT), surpassed only by the joint Kellogg / HKUST program. It is the eighth time that this program is in first place. For something will be the best.

The program of the University of Tsinghua / Insead, first in 2015, falls one place, until the third. Two other intercontinental programs complete the first five positions, which shows the good results of the courses taught through agreements in more than one country. In fourth place is the EMBA-Global Americas & Europe, the sister program of the EMBA-Global Asia, but taught only by Columbia and the LBS; and in the fifth is Trium, taught by HEC Paris, LSE and NYU Stern School of Business, which was number one in 2014. The Sloan School of Management of MIT enters strongly in the ranking, in the eleventh position, the best result for a program taught by a single school since Insead was ninth in 2007. This is the seventeenth edition of FT’s global Executive MBA ranking on the 100 best executive programs in the world.

Among the Spanish schools, stands out the tenth position of the ESCP Europe EMBA, of ESCP Europe, which can be studied in our country, but also in France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy.

For its part IESE Business School has placed in the twelfth position the Global EMBA that is taught in Spain and the United States, while the Global EMBA of IE Business School occupies the thirteenth place.

Ranked 41 is the Global EMBA of Georgetown University and Esade.

EMBAs are modular and participants work and attend classes once a month or every two months. The ranking is based on data from business schools and graduate students in 2014. The students of EMBA-Global Asia, launched in 2008, have an average salary of $ 319,000, a 78% increase over the salary prior to studying the Program. More than 80% of graduates of the class of 2014 occupy senior positions. They also have one of the highest satisfaction rates, 83%.

The alumni of the program also value the global vision they achieved studying in three continents. “The University of Hong Kong has been an excellent addition to its sister program,” says one of them. “It gave us a comprehensive perspective of the most recent developments in Asia.”

Those who have studied at Kellogg / HKUST have the highest average salary, $ 478,000 and a satisfaction level of 82%. Most graduates highlight the quality of the teaching staff “The academic level is formidable, the teachers have a lot of experience in the academic and industrial fields, providing the perfect combination of theory and practice”. HEC Lausanne has experienced the biggest progression, rising 26 positions to 70, after falling thirteen positions last year.

Another nine schools appear for the first time or return to the ranking, such as the Ross School of Business of the University of Michigan, which returns to 36, seven more posts than in 2015. Both NHH of Norway, in 88th place, and Melbourne Business School , in 60, they appeared for the last time in the ranking in 2010.

An EMBA demands a strong personal commitment, as well as an economic one. “It was very hard to combine the work and the EMBA calendar with a senior position and my family,” says a graduate. “Collaboration and study groups are essential.” The modules of the most international programs take place in different places to offer a global vision of the businesses. Rotman’s Omnium EMBA, for example, is studied on five continents. “Going to class with jet-lag is certainly a challenge,” adds another graduate student.

The first school and the best: Kellogg / HKUST

This is the second year and the eighth time that the joint official MBA from Kellogg School of Management in Illinois and HKUST Business School in Hong Kong tops this ranking. The quality of the participants is one of its strengths. “The excellent classroom environment offers great opportunities to weave a network of relationships,” says a graduate student, who adds that “among the students in my class some business has been done, including at least six start-ups.” Alumni receive the highest average salary three years after graduation, $ 478,000.

New addition: Columbia / HKU / LBS

The intercontinental joint program taught by Columbia Business School, London Business School and the University of Hong Kong is in second place. The strength of the three schools is their base. “The combination of the schools was very powerful and attracted very interesting students,” says a graduate. The EMBA focuses mainly on entrepreneurship. More than 40% of the graduates of the class of 2014 created their own start up during or from their EMBA, compared to an average percentage of 27%.

Balance in gender diversity: CUHK
CUHK Business School has the highest balance between students of both sexes, with 49% of women compared to an average of 29% among the 100 schools in the ranking. Only the two programs taught by the University of Hong Kong and by BI Norway / Fudan University have a majority of women. This is a change of direction from five years ago, when only a quarter of the CUHK students were women. On the other hand, in the teaching staff there is not so much diversity since only 24% are female.

The Swiss school has climbed the most posts, twenty-six, to reach 70th place. The school fell 13 places the previous year. Students in the class of 2014 have an average salary of $ 133,000, 29% more than their salary before studying the EMBA. This supposes 12 and 7 percentage points more respectively, in front of the previous students. Even though both are below the average, the students gave a high score to this program. “For me, it is the EMBA with the best value for money in Europe,” says a graduate student, noting the relatively low price of the program (34,500 Swiss francs in 2013).

The Chinese diaspora that changes schools
Recently the Financial Times was talking about how improving the quality of Chinese schools is creating new labor networks to which the European and American MBA programs will have to adapt.

According to Jonathan Moules, in FT, the issue is that China has long been providing a large number of international students to MBA master’s degrees in Western business schools. The GMAC shows data that allow to affirm that the Asian country has the highest number of international applications for studies in the United States and Canada. In Europe, it is only surpassed by India.

The increase in the presence of Chinese business schools in the MBA lists gives rise to a great competition among those who return to the country looking for a job. The professional network that these students build during the time they spend in Chinese business schools can offer them a considerable advantage over those who study abroad during those two years. For more information you can visit our website
